BASIC BABY CARE GUIDE FOR FIRST TIME PARENTS

Basic baby care, selecting baby products

The new parents' level of excitement is natural after you welcome a newly born baby into your life; followed by the stress of taking care of the newly born baby, which is completely normal.

It can be avoided if new parents prepare themselves beforehand. A little guidance from here and there would surely calm you down. Early preparation will enable you to prevent stressful situations, and your lead instincts will guide you on what to do and how to take care of your newborn baby. Some of the tips for taking care of the baby are:

Hygiene

The hygienic condition of the newly born baby is critical for new parents. You need to keep in mind that their newborn babies are very vulnerable to germs and exposure to any other kind of allergy or illness. The newborn babies do not have strong immune systems yet, at such an early stage of life; therefore, your baby is more susceptible to bacterial and viral infections.

Besides the optimum hygienic baby care for a healthy newborn, an important piece of advice for new parents is to prepare yourself as much as you can ahead of time by taking care of certain things; like cooking meals and freezing them, forming a birth plan, and buying what your baby will need for the better, in advance.

Product selection

The parenting tips for taking care of your newborn babies at early stages are incomplete without the provided guidelines on how to choose the right baby products, free of toxic elements. The near to ideal baby product should not be harsh on your baby's eyes or skin, cause dryness of the baby's skin or disrupt skin’s natural barrier. Your newly born baby's product should be:

  • Completely safe and gentle: A baby's safety is the ultimate priority for each parent regardless of the circumstances. It is an understatement when the new parents deal with skin as delicate and fragile as that of their babies. Moreover, it is expected that the product which claims to be specifically made as a baby product would be safe to use for baby skin.
  • Allergic test before usage: Allergic reactions are more commonly found in babes due to their skin being delicate and not used to foreign products. The allergy-causing agents are widespread, which means that no substantial element can be said to be completely free of any allergic reactions. However, it must be tested for a product to be considered a baby product and have proved negative for allergic tendencies. In other words, it must be a clinically proven mild product.
Massage

Scientific research has declared that gentle massages against the baby's skin can relax them, improve your newborn baby's sleeping patterns, and calm them down when your baby is irritable due to something. Giving the baby a massage is also a great way to bond with them in the early stages. Baby massage is one of the soothing ways to calm your baby down when they are crying or to help your baby sleep.

Freshen up the baby

Freshening up your newly born baby can be a great bonding experience after every bath, soothing massage, and diaper change. You can use anti-rash and skin-softening powder, which protects your baby's skin from excess moisture and leaves it soft and smooth. The powder eliminates friction while keeping skin cool and comfortable at its best.

Holding a baby

Since your baby is fragile at an earlier stage, there are some ways to hold the baby like; the newborn's neck muscles are not yet developed, so you will need to support your baby's head whenever you pick your baby up. You should also support your baby's head against your shoulder or with your opposite hand while carrying them.

The newborn may feel fragile and delicate to everyone, but the caretaker should not be afraid to touch, handle, or hold them. Instead, some studies show that babies who are held for more than 2 hours per day thrive better and cry less because of the interaction.

Diapers

The new parents are often surprised at the number of diapers their baby goes through in a day. To make life easier for yourself, you must store plenty of diapers beforehand, do not leave this task for the very end, considering your baby needs to be changed of the diaper several times a day. It's also helpful to learn to change your baby's diaper ahead of time, considering your newborn's delicate and fragile features.

One small issue that you cannot get over is the nappy rashes, as most children aged between 0 to 2 years develop a diaper rash somehow. When you see the first sign of redness, you need to apply a safe yet effective zinc oxide-based cream on the diaper area to prevent rashness from creating a burn and itchy feeling. Thereby, to keep your baby's diaper area dry, you must apply a baby diaper rash powder at every diaper interval. This anti-rash powder repels moisture and reduces friction on the skin, thereby providing complete protection against rashness.

Sleep

The sleep patterns of babies change as they grow up. Your newborn baby will sleep through a major part of the day, waking up often during the day and night. Even after this, you can still develop a proper bedtime routine for your baby from an early stage, as early as 6 to 8 weeks.

As your baby grows up, they start to develop a concrete nighttime sleep routine rather than with fewer daytime naps. You can help your baby with their sleep routine by teaching them that nighttime is for sleep and not play. Also, little adjustments to your baby’s sleep schedule require some effort and full concentration on your baby. After some time, your baby learns and keeps up with the schedule regardless of any help.

Final words

Parents of the newly born baby can be perplexed about some aspects while taking care of their newborn, which is quite normal, given the conditions. Some help from the family members or a piece of advice from an expert would not drag them back like some competition. With time everything sets in place, but the first few weeks are the most important as you welcome a fragile and delicate being as a new addition to your family.
